There are lots of myths surrounding Diabetes such as if you are overweight or obese, you will eventually develop type 2 diabetes, eating too much sugar causes diabetes, Diabetes is not that serious of a disease, people with diabetes should eat special diabetic foods, if you have diabetes, you should only eat small amounts of starchy foods, such as bread, potatoes and pasta and the list goes on and on. But the important question is what Diabetes is exactly?

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic condition of having higher than normal blood sugar levels. There are three types of Diabetes.

1. Insulin Dependent Diabetes or Type 1

It is a disease that destroys pancreatic cells meaning no insulin production is possible. This requires insulin to treat, is typically developed as a child or young adult.

2. Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes or Type 2

It is more common and typically affects people over the age of 45, who are also overweight. Those suffering from type 2 are unable to produce enough insulin, and sugar builds up in the bloodstream.

3. Gestational Diabetes

It is observed during pregnancy that the female develops resistance towards insulin however in most of the case it is reversed after the child birth.

Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations.

A common myth about diabetes is that it is a life-long disease that affects the management of sugar in the body. A patient of diabetes needs to take life-long medication and need to keep him/her away from sugar. However new searches have shown that type 2 diabetes is reversible with adequate Medical Nutrition Therapy and active life style.

Type 2 Diabetes:

If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.

Type 2 Diabetes or insulin resistance can be reversed with diet therapy and exercise. Our carefully designed Diet plans helps the body maintain its equilibrium and the blood sugar levels again.
